Four different models of lambrequin - with puffs, arched, rigid and grabbing - in our selection of master classes.

What is lambrequin?

Lambrequin is a horizontal strip in a curtain composition decorating a window opening (as well as a doorway or arch). Lambrequins perform both a decorative function - to decorate the window opening and curtain composition, and practical - for example, they can hide the curtain rod and protect from drafts.

Lambrequins are:

- soft - they are sewn from fabric using folds and draperies, decorated with tassels and so on;

- rigid - for their manufacture a rigid base is needed;

- combined - they combine the elements of soft and hard lambrequins.

Soft lambrequins are divided into many different types, depending on the shape, size, quantity, and "organization" of the folds, each of which has its own manufacturing features.

To learn how to sew high-quality complex varieties of lambrequins, you need to spend a lot of time - this art is probably not for beginners. But some simple types of lambrequins can be sewn by beginners.

Do-it-yourself Roman curtains: 3 workshops of varying complexity

Step 1

Decide on the length and width of your lambrequin. The build factor of this lambrequin is 2.5. The size of the cornice in this example is 1.3 m. Thus, the width of the lambrequin will be 3.3 m. Choose the length of the lambrequin to your taste, also following the rule: the length of the lambrequin should be 1 / 5−1 / 6 of the length of the curtains. Also consider the height of the puffs: they will shorten your lambrequin a bit. In this case, the length of the pelmet is about 70 cm.

Step 2

Wet-heat the fabric so that it does not shrink and does not deform later. In this case, this treatment consists in ironing with steam, but in general it depends on the type of fabric you have chosen. How to conduct wet-heat treatment of different tissues, read here in detail.

Then cut out the lambrequin part. Work the short sides of the part by tucking it and sewing it on the machine.

Step 3

Make three blanks from cardboard: strips 8 cm, 15 cm and 18 cm wide.

Step 4

Lay out the lambrequin part on the work surface with the wrong side up. Attach an 8-centimeter pattern to the long side and, drawing it forward, draw a shallow line along the entire length.

Step 5

Now, using an 18-centimeter template, draw another line in parallel along the lambrequin part. Repeat 2 more times. You should get 4 stripes with a width of 8 cm, 18, 18 and 18 cm.

Step 6

Now, using a 15-centimeter template, draw lines perpendicular to the existing lines across the entire width of the lambrequin. It should come out so that the entire surface of the lambrequin is drawn into rectangles.

Step 7

Now mark the diagonals of the rectangles according to the scheme.

Step 8

With a needle and thread, fix the tissue sections according to the pattern, forming puffs. Repeat on all rectangles marked with diagonals. Fasten each puff well.

Step 9

Sew braid with fringe on the front side of the pelmet on one of its long sides. If the fabric is strewed, before this you can process the edge by tucking and sewing on the machine.

Step 10

Now sew the curtain tape on the other long side of the pelmet. Read more about how to choose and sew a curtain tape, read here.

Step 11

It remains, pulling the cords in the tape, collect the lambrequin, and hang it.

Lambrequin with pickups: master class

This video explains clearly and in detail how to build a pattern and sew a lambrequin with pickups.

Lambrequin arch: master class

One of the easiest and most versatile options.

You will need:

- fabric for lambrequin;

- slanting inlay of suitable color;

- curtain tape;

- sewing machine and thread;

- crayon;

- scissors;

- centimeter;

- paper, pencil and ruler to build patterns.

Step 1

Build a pattern. To do this, measure the length of your cornice and multiply this value by the assembly coefficient. This coefficient needs to be taken the more, the more magnificent folds you plan to make on a lambrequin. For thin well-draped fabrics, the assembly coefficient can be taken more, for dense and heavy - less. Typically, this coefficient is 1.5-3.5. If you use a standard curtain tape, usually the build factor is 2. The length of the cornice must be multiplied by the build factor and add 10 cm to process the edges. Take the remaining measurements to your taste. Build a pattern similar to the example in the picture.

Step 2

Fold the lambrequin fabric in half and transfer the pattern to the fabric. Add 1 cm seam allowances and cut out the lambrequin part.

Step 3

Oblique inlay process the entire part of the lambrequin around the perimeter.

Step 4

Sew the curtain tape from the inside out along the upper edge of the pelmet.

Step 5

It remains to collect the lambrequin by pulling the cords in the curtain tape and hang it.

Hard pelmet: master class

Such a lambrequin can be made from the same fabric as the curtains - then it will act as a decorative element and decorate the window and composition. You can also use his solo, as in the above case: here the lambrequin draws up the window opening, plus it protects it slightly from sunlight.

You will need:

- fabric for lambrequin;

- a rigid base for a lambrequin (plastic panels are used here, which can be bought at a hardware store);

- breadboard knife;

- ruler;

- scissors;

- strong glue (for plastic);

- wide adhesive tape;

- glue for fabric;

- thin synthetic winterizer.

Step 1

Decide on the width and length of the lambrequin. Well, if it is slightly wider than the window opening. Choose the height to your taste.

Step 2

Using a breadboard knife and a ruler, cut out a piece of plastic of the desired length and width from plastic. If the panel is not long enough, you can glue two panels together, securing them from the inside, as shown in the photo.

Step 3

Cut out of plastic and glue, as shown in the photo, the sides of the lambrequin.

Step 4

Put the fabric upside down on the table, then the synthetic winterizer, then the rigid base of the lambrequin. Wrap the edges of the fabric and glue them.

Step 5

Cut a rectangle from the fabric and, tucking its edges, glue the lambrequin to the inside.

Step 6

It remains to attach the finished lambrequin to the wall. To do this, you can use, for example, L-shaped mounts and screws.
