What is a caftan dress?
La DoubleJ / Zara / Mango
Initially, a caftan dress is a long, loose or straight cut dress with long or medium-length sleeves, most reminiscent of a tunic to the ankles. Such a dress may have slits on the sides and / or front closure. In modern models, options are possible - midi length or higher, a shortened (and even short) sleeve, different neckline shapes, the presence of draperies and so on. Materials can be very different, from translucent chiffon to dense cotton, linen or heavy jacquard fabric. Decorations and decor also vary. They may not exist at all, and vice versa, a caftan dress can be decorated very richly and intricately.

Depending on the model, fabric and decor, such a dress can play different roles. A caftan dress can be a beach cloak, home clothes, a variant of light outerwear for warm weather, a solo dress as an everyday dress model or an unusual evening dress in a bohemian style.

What and how to wear a kimono: 8 looks
History: "clothes for beautiful people"
Dior, 1966
The ancestor of a caftan dress can be considered directly a caftan, a variant of outerwear with a front closure. Among the Persians, the caftans were long, loose and were worn with a tight belt.Once in Europe, the caftan changed somewhat, gaining additional weight, a more fitted shape and shortening to the middle of the calf or knee. Two or three centuries ago, caftan was a common type of outerwear, both casual and ceremonial. But the caftan dress, which came into fashion in the middle of the twentieth century, most likely echoes the original eastern version.
Elizabeth Taylor
In the 1950s Christian Dior showed caftan dresses in his collections. The maestro was followed by Yves Saint Laurent, Roy Halston and other fashion designers. In such dresses, movie and music stars appeared on the screen and at parties (especially Elizabeth Taylor fell in love with the caftan). The famous fashion columnist Diana Vreeland, then editor of Harper's Bazaar, called the caftan dress "clothing for beautiful people." As a result, this model has a reputation for clothing simple, but refined, elegant, but relaxed, chic and comfortable. Dress-kaftan began to be called the clothes of aristocrats.

The most underrated wardrobe: 3 good reasons to sew a vest
Modernity: convenience + sophistication
Richard Quinn / Figue / Zara
Today, the caftan dress is back in fashion - similar models are in the collections of many brands, from Zara and H&M to Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta. A modern caftan dress is more diverse than several decades ago. It can be a colorful beach cloak or a laconic urban option, close to casual, a luxurious evening outfit or a loose dressing gown, which makes it possible to compose a mass of sets. Fabrics, details and decor are as diverse as today's fashion. But the uniform (straight / loose fit, like a tunic, with a slit or without a front) and the feeling of simultaneous comfort and chic that it gives to any look remained the same in a caftan dress. The current caftan dress is not only clothing for aristocrats: it has become a universal option for everyone who does not want to choose between convenience and sophistication.
